Learning institutions have been commended for their positive contribution towards preserving the environment. This comes after learners at Mukodza Secondary School in Buhera recently conducted a gulley reclamation exercise.

Environmental Management Agency (EMA) spokesperson Amkela Sidanke thanked authorities and learners at Mukodza school and all other institutions who have been participating in preserving the natural environment saying such acts depict good environmental stewardship.

“Learning institutions are playing a vital role in educating the young ones on sustainable environmental management thus inculcating a culture of environmental stewardship. On the other hand, education can be through extra or co-curricular activities.

“Learners at Mukodza secondary have done a good thing which shows good environmental stewardship. As EMA, we encourage all other institutions to do likewise,” said Sidanke.

Sidanke further encouraged learning institutions to step up efforts in organising quiz competitions, debates, and projects so as to impart environmental preservation knowledge among learners.

She also stated gulley reclamation, tree nurseries, and fireguards as some activities that learning institutions can embark on as ways of being environmentally friendly.

“They should continue with the good work of educating the nation on environmental management. They should also participate in school competitions such as quizzes, debates, and projects.

“Some exercises can be gulley reclamation, fireguard construction, tree nurseries, among others,” added Sidanke.

Schools, colleges, and universities usually contribute positively to the environment through tree nurseries, nutritional gardens, waste separation projects, and clean-up campaigns.
