The energetic new management that was thrust onto the leadership of the Kadoma Sports Club (KSC) has taken a massive revamp exercise of the whole institution to retain past glory.

The sports club in the heart of the city is known far and wide for its rich history in nurturing and talent development. It has stood the test of time, churning out talented gems in various fields mostly in cricket, tennis, and bowling.

Due to unforeseeable and unavoidable circumstances, the revered institution has been a pale shadow of its former self in recent years but with the coming on board of the current youthful leadership, the club is blossoming, again.

Chairman Adam ‘Skies’ Chifo, who is also the Lady Chevrons coach, is a tried and tested brain in institutional management. For two and a half decades, Chifo has worked in various capacities at the club including houseman, and operations chief.

The man who has taken over that post from Skies, Edmen Makawa took this news crew on the journey the club is riding on.

“We want to bring past glory to this club. It’s an institution known for championing and nurturing its reputation. We took over when things were on the downside. As you can see, we’ve managed to attract a large pool of membership though, we still feel more members have a role.”

He said that most of the members are young enthusiasts. In the same vein, the incumbent houseman encourages the older generation and senior citizens to be part of the multi-sports facility.

“We encourage more mature and older members to come on board. We feel that they have a lot to impart to the younger generation. That makes our development path sustainable. Their experience, knowledge, and expertise are always an asset in the existence of KSC,” said bulky Makawa.

The facility accommodates people from all backgrounds without discrimination.

At the moment, various refurbishment work is going on. One can marvel at the new floor tiles, smell the fresh paint, jog on lush green and glean at new ceilings that have settled in the club.

A mega borehole has been installed to ensure a continuous supply of reliable, fresh, safe, portable water for the sportspeople, fields, and patrons. Electricity is available to full scale as there is a high voltage generator on standby when main grid power falters.

“We have tried our best to ensure all facilities are operating without disruption. A borehole and generator are there for emergencies. You will agree with me that water supply and electricity availability are a challenge. So, we’ve hedged against shortfalls to ensure continuity of activities and operations.”

On utilization of the facility by members of the public, the vivacious houseman is open.

“We encourage people in the city to come and utilize this facility. It’s theirs to benefit from. We can host large gatherings like parties and conferences,” he quipped with a confident chuckle.

The outstretching home of sports has sections namely, bar and restaurant, tennis, bowls, gymnasium, football, and cricket.  All the sections are smiling and embracing refurbishment at various stages.

Most of them are in usable condition with tennis youngsters enjoying a new lease of life on the courts, daily.

KSC stands in stark contrast to the adjacent council-owned public swimming pools in dilapidated condition. It enjoys significant support from John Mark and Company which has stood by it from its inception.

According to Makawa, the sports centre is a non-profit institution. It sustains itself from members’ contributions, sales, and stakeholders’ benevolence. All funds generated are ploughed back into the running costs of the reawakening giant.
