Pierre Emerick Aubameyang – African star player profile

SuperSport viewers on DStv saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang once again underline his value to Arsenal, as he scored the decisive goal in their 2-1 home win over Burnley this past weekend.

With the Premier League game in the balance at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon – following goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Ashley Barnes to see the score locked at 1-1 – Gabonese marksman Aubameyang popped up in the 64th minute to secure a second straight win for Arsenal at the start of the 2019/20 season.

His goal was a 34th in just 51 Premier League appearances since his move to the Gunners in January 2018 from Borussia Dortmund. The French-born player was prolific at the German giants (he scored 141 times in five seasons at the Westfalenstadion) and he looks set to continue that trend in London.

The 30-year-old started his senior career at Italian giants Milan (though he made no competitive appearances for the Rossoneri) and represented Dijon, Lille and Monaco on loan from 2008 to 2011. His career then took off when he went to Saint-Etienne, first on loan and then permanently – he scored 41 goals in 97 appearances for Les Verts before Dortmund came calling in 2013.

On the international front, ‘Auba’ represented France at junior level before switching allegiance to Gabon (the nationality of his father Pierre Aubameyang, who captained the Panthers) in 2009. He has racked up over 50 caps for the national team and represented the country at four Africa Cup of Nations and the 2012 Olympic Games.

SuperSport viewers can see Aubameyang go in search of his 35th Premier League goal this coming weekend in a crunch match between Liverpool and Arsenal, which kicks off at 18:30  on Saturday 24 August.

‘Auba’ will be looking to stamp his authority in a match which will feature feature fellow African superstars Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, while Joel Matip and Naby Keita could also represent the continent.
