A community organisation in Chipinge is pushing women empowerment as one of its thrust.

In a statement to mark this year’s International Women’s Day, Platform for Youth and Community Development (PYCD) said it has been involved in many programmes to uplift women who are often excluded in political and economic processes.

“PYCD has been implementing several activities in Chipinge District that seek to promote women empowerment by building their confidence and self-esteem. These activities include solution-oriented platforms like Men’s Forum, Community Dialogues, Women Hearing, and Drop-In sessions at the PYCD Centre.

“Men’s Forums have allowed men to discuss gender issues and come up with strategies to fight and protect women’s rights,” revealed the organisation.

“Community Dialogue Meetings have created success stories for both men and women,” adds PYCD.

According to the organisation, its intervention ‘has contributed significantly to influence the acceptance on the positive roles for traditional leaders and female elected councilors in developmental committees’.

Meanwhile, speaking at the International Women’s Day celebrations held at Takwirira High School, Kumbirai Kahiya, director of Girls and Women Empowerment Network Trust (GWEN), challenged women to assume leadership positions.

“As women, you need to occupy key decision-making positions and dream beyond being housewives by educating yourselves,” Kahiya said.

She also urged the government to work towards removing barriers that limit women to access land and other resources.
