Woman dies in suspected elephant attack, body devoured by hyenas

An adult woman is suspected to have been attacked to death by an elephant in a shocking incident of human-wildlife conflict.

The suspected incident occurred on 7 December 2022 at the 321 km peg along Harare-Chirundu Highway at Nyakasanga Bridge.

Her body was then devoured by hyenas with some pieces of her body parts found scattered on the scene.

Zimbabwe Republic Police National Spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident and appealed for information that will assist in the identification of the deceased.

“A woman is suspected to have been attacked by an elephant leading to her death with parts of her body devoured by hyenas at 321 km peg along Harare-Chirundu Road at Nyakasanga Bridge on 7 December. Some pieces of her body parts were found scattered on the scene,” he said.

He appealed to anyone with information that will assist in the identification of the deceased and her next of kin to inform the police.

“We are appealing to anyone who may help us with information that helps in the identification of the deceased and her relatives to assist the police,” he said.

Human-wildlife conflicts in the area are rampant.
