Sunday features two-afternoon clashes pitting Sao Tome & Principe against Sierra Leone, and Lesotho against Zambia.

For Chipolopolo, this game will be the first in charge of new coach Avram Grant (formerly of Ghana and Chelsea), who is embracing the challenge of trying to improve Zambian football.

“I was looking for the right challenge; the challenge here is big and the potential is big and I am a man of challenges and this is the reason that I chose Zambia and Zambia also chose me and I will say thank you for choosing me,” explained the Israeli tactician.

“You see the young national team of Zambia improving a lot and I think this is the best for building something good for the present and the future and it is things that I want to do.”

Monday brings a quartet of matches, starting off with an afternoon clash between Rwanda and Benin, followed by Nigeria’s return game away to Guinea-Bissau in the early evening, as well as Angola taking on Ghana in Luanda.

Palancas Negras coach Pedro Goncalves acknowledges the quality of the Black Stars, but believes his team can spring a surprise – especially on home soil: “They are one of the best teams. I watched their performance and they are strong, they improved so much at the World Cup.”

He added, “We are going to face a powerful team in Africa, but in our mind we want to grow, play and challenge ourselves with the big teams. This is in our minds as we face the Black Stars. Watch out for us. We believe that we can beat them.”

Monday’s action is wrapped up in Group D with a clash between Ethiopia and Guinea, held in Rabat, Morocco, due to a lack of CAF-approved venues in the East African country.

“We would prefer to play at home, in front of our fans, but this is the situation we found ourselves in for now,” said Walia Ibex captain Shimelis Bekele. “We must make the most of it and continue our fight to reach the next AFCON.”
