On Friday 5 February 2021, Women In Agriculture Union donated organic fertilizers to 1000 beneficiaries in Harare so as to promote and boost yields in diverse farming businesses.
Speaking to Spiked Online Media, the founder, chairperson, and national coordinator for Women In Agriculture Union (WAU), Miss Olga Nhari said as a union they came up with the initiative in 2019 to help women engage in small scale farming business by donating agricultural inputs since the Zimbabwean economy is mostly agriculture-based.
The fertilizer donations were courtesy of Dream Catch company that manufactures organic fertilizer in Harare.
”The first 50 beneficiaries were women that we gave 4kgs of maize seeds per head in December 2020. We are not giving them every time but we want them to be self-sufficient so that next time we can provide some who could not have benefited from the donation till every woman gets to the level of self-sustenance,” Miss Nhari said.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Miriam Mashika said she was very grateful to the Women In Agriculture Union for the help. As the rains for the season 2020 /2021 seem to be good, most farmers are sure to have good yields. In the 2020 agricultural season, the government implemented the pfumvudza farming concept so that every household could manage to get enough food for domestic purposes and eradicate hunger in the country.
The Women In Agriculture Union is also supporting the government concept of pfumvudza by supporting women so that they won’t die of hunger. WAU was founded in September 2019 in Harare as the umbrella union for women farmers associations.
