Hon. Tinoda Machakaire, the Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports, Arts, and Recreation has paid tribute to women who play a major role in the development of the arts industry and are able to gain a meaningful living and contribute to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
The remarks came to the fore during the belated commemoration of the Women’s Day held at the National Art Gallery yesterday.
Presenting the speech on behalf of the Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports, Arts and Recreation, Mrs. Nomusa Moyo the deputy director in the same ministry for Harare Province applauded all women in the art leadership.
”I would like to acknowledge and appreciate all women who play a major role in the development of the arts industry and are able to gain a meaningful living and contribute to the Gross Domestic Product,” said Mrs. Moyo
The Minister, Kirsty Coventry, though in absentia, but in a speech on her behalf, said women are inherently resilient and creative. She encouraged women to monetize their talents and spoke against gender-based discrimination and gender-based violence.
The arts industry remains banned from public performances since the onset of COVID-19-induced lockdowns a year ago. This has affected many artists who have been earning a living through conducting live shows.
Among the artists who graced the event were Selmor Mutukudzi and Tendai Manatsa who performed and entertained the guests. Mrs Barbara Gotore, the assistant director for National Arts Council Zimbabwe said Covid 19 is real and urged artists to make use of virtual and social media platforms to interact with various audiences during the pandemic.
