Women Unashamed (WU), a civic based organisation is set to host a seminar on gender based violence(GBV) in the capital and the engagement is part of the efforts to minimize the alarming increase of GBV cases in different communities.

This comes at a time when various organizations and women advocacy groups are combining efforts to end all forms of violence against women and girls.

Accordingly to UNPFA, women play a critical role in sustainable development. When they are educated and healthy, their families, communities and countries benefit. Yet, gender based violence undermines opportunities for women and denies them the ability to fully utilize their basic human rights.

Other studies indicated that in Zimbabwe, about 1 in 3 women aged 15 to 49 have experienced physical violence and about 1 in 4 women have experienced sexual violence since the age of 15.

The one day symposium will be held in Mbare on the 29th of October 2021.

Speaking to Spiked Online Media, Brenda Shoko, the Executive Director Women Unashamed said the GBV Symposium will be a centre of discussion that is expected to find solutions in the fight against violence on women.

She said WU has noted with concern the ever increasing rate of gender based violence in the society.

“The GBV symposium will be one of our latest interventions to fight all forms of violence against women in all our societies. As a women advocacy group, we have noted the increase of GBV on women in communities and realized that a lot still needs to be done to address causes and effects of violence against women.”

“While we acknowledge great works done by different groups ranging from development partners, government departments and stakeholders, gender based violence still remains a topical issue which requires more interventions and concerted efforts to end the unfound calamities,” said Mrs Shoko.

She added that the event will be attended by renowned gender activists, psychologists, and sociologists and various stakeholders in the gender space.

“The event is open to all women and will be attended by various stakeholders in the gender space, the likes of gender activists, various women advocacy groups, psychologists, sociologists among other stakeholders.”

Issues of gender based violence have remained rampant in different communities hence calls have been made to escalate the awareness drive across societies.
