Zimbabwean information communication technology (ICT) guru, Dr. Cosmas Zavazava is gunning for the post of Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
This was revealed by Dr. Dingumuzi Phuti, the Deputy Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services during the 2022 Session of the ITU Council.
The session was meant to observe how those elected to ITU Council back in 2018 are going about in their important business of guiding the Union in between Plenipotentiary Conferences.
Dr. Phuti said Zimbabwe values the work that the Councillors are doing in ensuring that the ITU keeps the momentum in pursuing the Strategic Goals of the Union.
“The Zimbabwean Administration holds high the role of ITU as the United Nations’ lead organization for Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Through the work of the ITU, it is now a well-established fact that ICTs are the central nervous system for today’s Knowledge Society which, in essence, is underpinned by a digital global economy.
“Thanks to the ITU, we have seen the Global Community move together in combating the challenges of the 21st Century which, inter alia, include Pandemics, Climate Change, Cyber Security, Extreme Poverty among others.
“As Zimbabwe, we have witnessed the critical role that ICTs played during the COVID-19 pandemic in health, education, and business. Having realised the tremendous potential of ICTs, the Government of Zimbabwe has placed ICTs at the centre of all facets of our economy and society. We can, therefore, only marvel at the transformative power and positive energy that such a strategic move has released into the economy and the society at large. To the humble people of Zimbabwe ICTs are transforming Healthcare, Education, Agriculture, Energy, Social Security, and Public Service, among many other sectors. We, therefore, would like to most profoundly, thank the ITU, not only for the leadership and partnership but for being a platform for Global Transformation,” Dr. Phuti said.
He reiterated that Zimbabwe will continue to support the work of the Union towards the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda since ICTs have a pivotal role to play in facilitating the timely attainment of the 17 Sustainable Goals in the key areas of health, education, agriculture, and environmental protection, among many others.
Zimbabwe is committed to continuing hosting the ITU Area Office for Southern Africa in Harare.
As preparations for the forthcoming World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-21) to be held in Kigali, Rwanda in June this year, and for the next Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-22) to be held in Bucharest, Romania in 2022 are underway, Dr Phuti reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the cause of the Union.
