The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works (MoLGPW) is set to conduct a series of training workshops aimed at strengthening the capabilities of local authorities to engage effectively with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
These workshops will be held in Bulawayo and Mutare. The workshop in Bulawayo will run from June 30 to July 4, 2024, while that in Mutare will be from July 7 to July 11, 2024.
Speaking to this publication, Dr. Ayodele Odusola, the UNDP Zimbabwe Resident Representative said the workshops have several objectives.
“The workshops are meant to equip local authorities with a comprehensive understanding of the AfCFTA’s objectives, principles, and institutional framework. The series of training will explore the potential impacts of AfCFTA on local economies, businesses, and communities. They will also help in identifying opportunities for trade facilitation, investment, and industrial development in line with AfCFTA objectives. On top of this, it is hoped the training will address potential challenges and risks associated with AfCFTA implementation at the local level and provide guidance on mitigation strategies,” Dr. Odusola said.
Participants in the training will gain key outcomes. They are expected to come up with an enhanced understanding of the AfCFTA, enabling effective engagement with the trade agreement.
The training will also give participants an increased awareness of opportunities presented by AfCFTA for local economies, businesses, and communities. Local authorities are expected to develop action plans to guide the implementation of AfCFTA-related initiatives.
“We look forward to strengthened collaboration among local authorities for knowledge-sharing and joint initiatives as well as improved capacity for trade promotion and support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs),” the UNDP said in a statement.
Participants will be selected based on recommendations from the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, ensuring that individuals who will most benefit from and contribute to the training are chosen.
