To reduce consumption and waste generation, last Monday Sanyati District launched the Zero Waste Movement Chapter so that it minimizes waste and promotes sustainable living practices.
The Zero Waste Movement Sanyati chapter was launched by Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Hon Marian Chomb.
The Movement is aimed at encouraging individuals, communities, and organisations to adopt practices that reduce, reuse, refuse, re-purpose, and recycle waste with the ultimate goal of sending zero waste to landfills.
In a speech read on her behalf by the Director of Finance, Human Resources, and Administration in the office of the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Dr. Tirivangani Matare, Hon Chombo hailed Sanyati District for an unwavering dedication to heeding the call to embrace zero waste management.
“I would like to thank the District for your resolute response and unwavering dedication in heeding the call to embrace the Zero Waste Movement. It is a privilege to be part of this momentous occasion where we come together with a shared dedication to safeguard the environment and advocate for sustainable waste management practices,” said the Minister.
“This district has demonstrated its active involvement and determination to make a positive change at the grassroots levels in line with President HE Emmerson Mnangagwa’s call of leaving no one and no place behind.”
The adoption of the Zero Waste Movement follows First Lady Amai Auxilia Mnangagwa’s signing of the Global Zero Waste Goodwill Declaration aimed at promoting sustainable waste management practices.
Running under the theme Kadoma is our home, Zero Waste is our Responsibility, the theme is a sweet call for the district’s active participation in sustainable solid waste management practices by actively participating in clean-up campaigns.
The launch of the Sanyati district Zero Waste Movement Chapter is a significant step towards building a cleaner and more sustainable future and this movement is expected to catalyze change, promote responsible waste management practices, and encourage individuals, businesses, and communities to adopt a zero waste mindset.
The Minister noted that the launch should translate into vibrant recycling opportunities for the community.
“I urge waste generators, in line with the cradle to the grave principle, to invest and support recycling opportunities at various levels. In the end, we will have a clean and healthy community,” Hon Chombo added.
However, the Minister bemoaned the challenges the cities are facing, particularly the irregular collection of waste, absence of adequate litter receptacles, and engineered landfills with Kadoma and Norton as the only cities to engineer landfills but its management lacks.
The zero-waste movement encourages businesses to offer sustainable operations and products, like reusable and refillable packaging. Its launch has incorporated the establishment of Clean Schools, Clean Cities, and Clean Homes.
The launch was graced by the Director of economic affairs in the Office of President and Cabinet for Mashonaland West, Mr. Shara; the Provincial Education Director, Mr. Gabriel Mhumha, Provincial EMA boss, Zero Waste Provincial Chair, Mrs. Whami; and District Development Coordinator for Sanyati and Mhondoro.
Also in attendance were the Kadoma City Town Clerk, Mr. Malvern Dondo; the Mayor of Kadoma, His Worship, Mr. Nigel Ruzario; Kadoma City councilors and directors; ZANU PF Central Committee Member, Mai Ruwizhi; and Members, Government and District Heads of Departments; banking sector representatives; Sanyati District Schools Inspector, Mr Joseph Majasi; as well as heads of Schools and learners.
