Technological innovations have transformed Zimbabwe’s agriculture, enhancing productivity, efficiency, and sustainability in pursuit of food and nutrition security.
This was revealed by Dr. Andrew Matibiri, the Chief Executive Officer of the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society (ZAS), who was speaking about the key role that technological innovations play in improving agriculture, ahead of the 114th edition of the Zimbabwe Agricultural Show to be held from 26 to 31 August 2024 in Harare.
The show will be held under the theme “Cultivating Prosperity: Growing Business. Innovating for Change. Nurturing our Future.”
“The Zimbabwe Agricultural Show has played a significant role in showcasing technological innovations, driving adoption, and fostering industry growth,” Dr Matibiri said.
Key technological advancements include:
Precision Agriculture: GPS-guided farming, drones, and satellite imaging enable optimized crop management, reducing waste and increasing yields.
Irrigation Management Systems: Automated irrigation controllers and sensors minimize water usage, reducing costs and environmental impact.
Mobile Applications: Farming apps provide access to market information, weather forecasts, and best practices, empowering smallholder farmers.
Mechanization: Tractors, planters, and harvesters increase efficiency, reducing labor costs and enhancing productivity.
Vertical Farming: Hydroponics and aquaponics enable year-round production, minimizing land use and environmental impact.
Livestock Monitoring Systems: Electronic identification, health monitoring, and feeding systems optimize livestock management.
Weather Forecasting: Advanced weather forecasting enables farmers to prepare for extreme weather events, reducing crop losses.
E-Extension Services: Online platforms provide farmers with access to extension services, training, and expertise.
Agricultural Drones: Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) facilitate crop monitoring, soil analysis, and precision application.
