Ambassador of the state of Palestine, Dr. Tamer Almassri appreciated Zimbabwe’s principled position of solidarity with the Palestinian people at the just-ended Olympic Games where athletes from the Southern African country did not participate in sporting events which involved interaction with Israeli athletes. Team Zimbabwe did not hold official bilateral interactions with the Israeli team.
“The state of Palestine welcomes this gesture, especially at a time when apartheid Israel is committing genocide in Gaza which so far killed 45 000 Palestinians mostly, children and women,” Ambassador Almassri said.

Zimbabwe sent seven athletes to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Only two of the athletes – Makanakaishe Charamba and Tapiwanashe Makarawu, reached the finals of this year’s 200m event.

Other participants were long-distance runner, Isaac Mpofu, who finished 19th in the Marathon. Rower Stephen Cox finished the game in 25th position. Swimmer Denilson Cyprianos and Paige van der Westhuizen were eliminated in the first round, while Rutendo Nyahora did not finish the women’s marathon after suffering an injury along the way.
