The Platform for Agricultural Risk Management (PARM) and the African Union Development Agency of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD) are co-organising the side-event Accelerating Investments for Inclusive and Holistic Agricultural Risk Management in Africa” on the sidelines of the commemoration of the 15th Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security (ADFNS), the 20th edition of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Partnership Platform (PP) and the associated Malabo Policy Learning Event (MAPLE). The hybrid side event will take place on 30 October 2024 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm (CAT) at Rainbow Towers Hotel in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Created in 2013 following the G20 discussions on agricultural growth and food security, PARM represents a unique and strategic global multi-stakeholder partnership in the area of Agricultural Risk Management. It is hosted by IFAD and co-funded by IFAD, AFD, Italy, and EU and works in strategic partnership with AUDA-NEPAD.

Since 2014, PARM has been working in strategic partnership with AUDA-NEPAD to support the African Union member states in mainstreaming a holistic approach to Agricultural Risk Management (ARM) in their development and investment plans. Agricultural risk management is key to de-risk investments in the agricultural sector, improve the livelihoods of small-scale farmers, and contribute to a future in which productive, sustainable, and healthy agri-food systems can feed a global population of 9.1 billion people by 2050.

The side-event will showcase the results achieved through agriculture and food security risk management, contributing to enhanced productivity and building the resilience of systems in Africa.

The panel will feature leading experts from PARM, AUDA-NEPAD, and COMESA reflecting on how to accelerate investments in agriculture through agricultural risk management. The panel discussion will also enable experience sharing and showcase innovative agricultural practices and risk management tools to support regional economic communities, AU member states, and smallholder farmers to effectively manage risks and de-risk investments in agriculture.

Furthermore, the session will build on the success stories of African smallholder farmers which have been documented by African storytellers and media professionals through the PARM Stories Challenge. The PARM Stories Challenge aims to portray rural farmers’ day-to-day self-resilience to agricultural risks and showcase how this could be strengthened to increase their productivity and contribute to sustainable agri-food systems in their communities.
