Zimbabweans observe International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People

Ordinary Zimbabwean citizens, church organizations, ruling ZANU-PF party officials, poets, writers, and civil society organizations in Zimbabwe on 29 November 2024 joined the international global community to observe the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People recognized on the same day.

 

The solidarity event was convened by the Palestinian Embassy in Zimbabwe and is a global amplified call to end the ongoing genocide and atrocities occurring in Palestine, especially in Gaza.

 

At the solidarity event, one spokesperson disclosed that at least 44,000 Palestinian citizens have succumbed to the ongoing genocide being perpetrated by the Israeli government.

 

She added that at least 70% of the Palestinian population, which consists of mostly women and children is severely impacted by the raging conflict.

Some of the organizations who graced the event include the Women Writers Support Network – Africa, World Day of Prayer Church, and the Coalition Against Economic Sanctions (CAES), just to mention a few.

 

Palestinian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Tamer Almassri said at the solidarity event that since October 2023, the state of Israel has committed genocidal warfare against the people of Palestine.

 

He said that Israel is not ceasing the butchering of Palestinian citizens and is being aided by some other foreign states.

 

Almassri said that Israel’s onslaught has been largely intensified in the small Gaza Strip.

 

He revealed that at least 87,000 tonnes of bombs, which are seven times more than the 15,000 tonnes of nuclear arsenal deployed on Hiroshima – Nagasaki, Japan in 1945 by the USA, have been unleashed on the Palestinian people.

 

Almassri said that there are now at least more than 56,000 martyrs who have been declared by the Palestinian state due to the conflict. He also added that at least 95% of infrastructure in Gaza including homes, churches, and hospitals has been destroyed in Gaza.

 

Almassri added that of the 35 hospitals which were in Gaza, now only two of them remain due to the ongoing conflict.

 

He also added that schools and universities have been razed down and called for a global call for international peace and security.

 

The Ambassador also highlighted the increase in the number of journalists who have been killed to stifle the free flow of information.

 

He said that at least 186 Palestinian journalists have been killed in the conflict, stifling the free flow of information, freedom of speech, democracy, leading to the denial of human rights.

 

Almassri said that the Palestinian people were encouraged by what he referred to as a flame of hope emanating from the people of Zimbabwe, supported by the Presidency and other stakeholders in the country.
