Charlene Ruto, the Founder of SMACHs Foundation, which advocates for smart agriculture and climate action, has encouraged the inclusion of youth-led organizations of persons with disabilities in decision-making processes to ensure they are not left behind.
Speaking during her maiden visit to the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa at the Shape Africa Summit, as part of her recent appointment as a member of the Panel of the Future, Ruto emphasized that physically challenged individuals have the right to make decisions on matters affecting their communities and the environment.

“I strongly encourage partnerships and networks that foster collaborations between youth OPDs and environmental organizations. These collaborations can amplify the voices of young people with disabilities and support inclusive climate initiatives,” Ruto explained.
Ruto noted that for Africa to ensure inclusive job opportunities for persons with disabilities (PWDs) as the continent transitions to an eco-friendly economy, several steps are crucial:
– Capacity-Building Initiatives*: Focus on skills development and training in green industries, particularly those tailored to PWDs, to equip them for emerging roles.
– Partnerships with Technical Institutions*: Enhance accessibility to green skills training in areas like sustainable agriculture, waste management, or renewable energy.
Ruto also shared her passion for empowering youth in PWD communities, highlighting her work with the Deaf community. “As I work with PWDs on several programs like inclusive education and creating awareness on sustainable practices, having the younger generation understand and implement these practices in school, the Deaf school in Isiolo operates a self-sustaining ecosystem, growing food, raising fish, and storing surplus harvest after sun drying,” Ruto explained.
This push for inclusion aligns with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, emphasizing equal opportunities and non-discrimination in education and employment.
