Nesco Community Football Club: Bridging Rural Talent to Opportunity

Nesco Community Football Club, a grassroots initiative based in Buhera District, Manicaland Province, Zimbabwe was founded on 7 January 2024 by UK-based Zimbabwean Mr Chamu Mhomwa. The club was established with the vision of creating a drug- and substance-abuse-free community while bridging the opportunity gap between rural and urban youth.

The club is home to Under 9s, U11s, U13s, U15s, U17s, a Senior Team, and three netball teams, including Nesco Queens. These teams provide a platform for young people to showcase and develop their talent. Recognizing that children and youth in urban areas often have greater access to professional scouting and development opportunities, Mhomwa launched Nesco to address this disparity. The raw talent in Nerutanga is abundant, and with the right support and resources, it can be nurtured to transform the lives of young players.

Nesco has expanded its platform to young girls with the formation of Nesco Queens, a dedicated girls’ team. Before matches, the girls participate in discussions on important topics such as reproductive health, rights, and responsibilities. These sessions aim to empower the girls with knowledge and life skills that extend beyond the sports field.

The club also emphasizes responsibility, teamwork, and leadership both on and off the pitch. Parents play an integral role in Nesco’s success, regularly attending matches and providing guidance to the children. One parent, reflecting on the positive impact of the club, shared: “Since my son joined the club, his time management skills and participation at home have improved. I would like to thank Mr. Mhomwa for this community initiative—our kids are happy.”

 Community Football Club is deeply rooted in community ownership, with parents and community members recognizing its value and actively supporting its mission. The club is not just about sports—it is about creating a support system that nurtures young people in all aspects of life. Parents, such as the Takaedza family from Nerutanga, often take the time to speak with the children during matches, reinforcing positive values and helping to foster a sense of unity and shared purpose.

In 2024, Nesco strengthened its reach by establishing three additional netball teams, further solidifying its role as a cornerstone of the local community. With support from the Raiders Netball Club in England, Nesco Queens was officially launched on 29 September 2024, offering additional opportunities for young girls to thrive through sports.

The club’s captain, Thabani Mkandla, sets a strong example with the mantra #SayNoToDrugs #SupportTalent. Despite many players competing barefoot, their passion and determination are evident in their smiles and dedication on the field. One young player shared his dream: “I want to play for a big team so that I can build a house for my parents. I see players making a living out of soccer, and one day I’m going to make it.”

Nesco Community Football Club is committed to expanding its impact by providing more opportunities for young people in Nerutanga to develop their talent and life skills. Plans include establishing a training academy, acquiring proper equipment and uniforms, and improving access to educational programs that focus on health, leadership, and personal development. We aim to create a safe, nurturing environment where every child—regardless of background—can thrive both on and off the field.
