Dr. Deckster Savadye, the Chief Executive Officer and Registrar of the National Biotechnology Authority of Zimbabwe (NBA), who is currently in India, New Dehli, attending the 31st Board Meeting of the ICGEB said the country is set to benefit immensely from its participation in this forum.
Speaking to Spiked Online Media from India, Dr. Savadye said Zimbabwe has benefited from its membership of the ICGEB through the training of scientists, provision of grants, and equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As a country, we also benefit from technology transfer for biopharmaceutical products. The benefits will continue to accrue as more biotechnological research results are commercialised. The NBA, being Zimbabwe’s national competent authority is spearheading these activities,” Dr. Savadye added.
Zimbabwe is a member state of the ICGEB which it joined in 2019. The ICGEB is the organisation responsible for International coordination of the Biotechnology sector. The ICGEB facilitates the development of human capital through skills development and the commercialisation of Biotechnology through Technology transfer.
Biotechnology is a key strategic sector for the whole world through its applications in health, agriculture, environment, and industry.
Zimbabwe has embraced high-level technological advancement to achieve national development to achieve Vision 2030. Biotechnology is key to achieving Vision 2030, hence the need to participate in the global platforms.
The adoption of Biotechnology in Zimbabwe is very important due to its potential in producing goods and services. This has already been demonstrated by the establishment of the Mapfura/ Marula value addition factory in 2021 in Mwenezi which produces several products.
Similar industries that add value to our natural resources have since been established throughout the country. Biotechnology has the potential to improve the productivity of the agricultural medical and energy sectors of Zimbabwe.
