Today, the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) stands tall and proud as it joins others to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) now the African Union (AU), a powerful symbol of the continent’s shared history, identity, and determination.
In his statement, H.E. Chief Fortune Charumbira, the President of the Pan-African Parliament, on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of the African Union on 25 May 2025, underscored the importance of this day when on this day in 1963, visionary leaders gathered in Addis Ababa and etched a new chapter in the destiny of the continent.
He said with courage and clarity, the African leaders declared Africa’s right to self-determination, unity, and development.
“They lit the torch of Pan-Africanism, a flame that continues to guide our path towards sovereignty, dignity, and collective advancement. This year, under the African Union’s 2025 theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations” we are called not only to remember our past but to actively shape our future. This theme speaks to centuries of injustice of slavery, colonial domination, systemic racism, and economic marginalization that have long undermined the potential of African people both on the continent and across the globe. As the Pan-African Parliament, we stand resolute in our commitment to this cause.
“Reparative justice is not simply about compensation; it is about truth, healing, and transformation. It is about acknowledging historical crimes, holding accountable those who benefited from them, and ensuring redress that restores dignity, rebuilds trust, and reforms the systems that continue to perpetuate inequality. We assert that the demand for reparations is not a plea it is a right grounded in international law, moral conscience, and historical evidence. It is a call for the world to reckon with the legacy of exploitation and to join Africa in building a future based on equity, mutual respect, and justice,” Chief Charumbira said.
This year also marks the 21st anniversary of the Pan-African Parliament. In this milestone year, the Pan-African Parliament renews its pledge to be the voice of Africa’s people, a watchdog for continental accountability, and a platform for dialogue, legislation, and progressive change.
“We will continue to amplify the voices of the marginalized, champion inclusive policies, and advocate for the integration of the African diaspora in our development agenda. As we reflect on our journey from liberation to transformation, let us remember that our strength lies in our unity. Let us rise, not as fragmented states, but as One Africa with One Voice speaking boldly for justice, for peace, and for a prosperous future that leaves no African behind.
“On this Africa Day, may we be inspired by the sacrifices of the past, emboldened by the opportunities of the present, and united in our vision for a just and dignified tomorrow,” he added.
Amon Tangwena, a leadership coach, said May 25th marks Africa Day, a celebration of the continent’s rich cultural diversity, vibrant history, and remarkable achievements. As we commemorate this special day, he urged Africans to embark on a journey to explore Africa’s fascinating heritage and what makes it so unique.
“Africa is home to over 2,000 languages, 3,000 ethnic groups, and 54 recognized countries. From the ancient pyramids of Egypt to the vibrant cities of South Africa, Africa’s diversity is its greatest strength. The continent’s cultural heritage is a treasure trove of traditions, music, art, and literature. Africa has faced numerous challenges throughout its history, from colonialism to apartheid. However, the continent has shown remarkable resilience and determination. Today, Africa is a hub of innovation, entrepreneurship, and progress.
“As we celebrate Africa Day, let’s look to the future with hope and optimism. Africa is a continent of possibilities, with a growing youth population, innovative entrepreneurs, and a strong sense of community. Africa Day is a celebration of the continent’s rich heritage, diversity, and achievements. As we mark this special day, let’s appreciate Africa’s contributions to the world and look forward to a brighter future,” Tangwena added.
