As French oil giant TotalEnergies marks its 100th anniversary, African climate activists have issued a scathing critique of the company’s legacy through a satirical campaign titled TotalEnergies: 100 Years of Pollution.
The satirical video TotalEnergies: 100 Years of Pollution exposes the gap between TotalEnergies’ claims of corporate social responsibility and the devastating reality of its fossil fuel extraction projects. With a blend of humor and critical analysis, the video aims to capture the attention of young people and inform them about the detrimental effects of pollution and the climate crisis caused by powerful fossil fuel corporations.
The campaign and video are produced by Kick Polluters Out, a movement of African creatives fighting against Big Polluters. Kick Polluters Out is hosted by Zimbabwe’s Magamba Network and includes Buni Media (Kenya) and Journal Rappé (Senegal). Partners in the campaign include Don’t Gas Africa and Stop EACOP.
As TotalEnergies marks its centennial, it symbolizes the broader fossil fuel industry’s legacy of environmental destruction, negative climate impacts, and social injustice issues. The anniversary serves as a pivotal moment to reflect on the need for a transition to sustainable energy solutions and the urgent call for accountability from companies that have historically prioritized profit, over the planet and people.
Through art, creativity, and collaboration, we empower young people to raise their voices, spread awareness, and drive action against big polluters like TotalEnergies. The time for action is now. As we face the devastating impacts of the changing climate, it has never been more critical to act. The scientific community warns that limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is essential to avoid catastrophic consequences. Every second counts. We must rally together to expose the hypocrisy of fossil fuel companies.

Samm Farai Monro, Magamba Network & Kick Polluters Out said: “We want to gatecrash TotalEnergies’ birthday party with the message that enough is enough. After 100 years of pollution by Total Energies and Big Oil, Africa is suffering from heatwaves, floods, and droughts. Despite Big Oil’s promises of development, 600 million Africans still live without access to electricity. We’ve had enough of TotalEnergies’ neocolonialism and exploitation! TotalEnergies must stop all current and new African fossil fuel projects, pay for the environmental damages they have caused, and exit the African continent. It’s time for us Africans to build our just, renewable energy future that works for all!”
Karabo Mokgonyana, Don’t Gas Africa said: “As TotalEnergies celebrates 100 years, we mourn 100 years of exploitation, environmental degradation, and broken promises. Over the past century, TotalEnergies has left a devastating legacy across the African continent – fueling environmental destruction, displacing communities, and exacerbating the climate crisis. Africa cannot afford another century of fossil-fueled colonialism. It is time to end Total’s reign of destruction and chart a new path rooted in renewable energy, justice, and sustainable development for our people and our planet.”
Zaki Mamdoo, StopEACOP: “For a century, Total has formed part of the colonial project that has bled Africa dry. Cloaked in the rhetoric of sustainability, this corporate giant continues to devastate our communities, exploit our workers, and destroy our environment—all to enrich a multinational elite and fuel the economies of imperialist countries abroad. Total is not a partner for progress; it is a parasite, backed by the violent machinery of Western imperialism, extracting wealth from our communities while leaving destruction and poverty in its wake. This video exposes the brutal hypocrisy of Total’s greenwashing—a smokescreen designed to disguise its role as a destroyer of our planet and a plunderer of Africa’s future. Total owes reparations to this continent for the lives it has ruined and the resources it has stolen, and we demand that they pay up, and get out.”
Stephen Horn, Clean Creatives SA: “The 100 Years of Total video by the brilliant team at Magamba corrects the narrative pushed by Total and its enablers in the PR, advertising and fossil fuel lobby that promotes the company as a sustainable brand which has made a positive contribution in Africa. Nothing could be further from the truth. As the video makes clear in a powerful way through clever use of satire, Africans are already counting the cost of climate impacts from rising emissions partly due to Total, not to mention being displaced and facing instability due to its operations around the continent. Total may be celebrating 100 years, but we are mourning, as we know that 100 years from now we will be living on a vastly different, less habitable planet, due to climate change. A fact the company knew about decades ago and chose not to act upon – putting all of our lives at risk.”
