The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has unveiled the 2019 Annual National Sports Awards (ANSA) finalists and sponsorship and revealed that the event will be held on the 29th of January 2020 in Harare.
Briefing the media in Harare on the 22nd of January 2020, the SRC Director General Mr Prince Mupazviriho said the unveiling of the nominees was a critical milestone in the delivery of the ANSA ceremony as it creates awareness to ensure that the sporting fraternity’s outstanding performance becomes known in Zimbabwe and beyond.
“The awards are meant to recognise, celebrate and honour outstanding performance by Zimbabwean sportspersons and organisations. It is also an opportunity for us to thank and honour corporates who make sport thrive.
“Once the finalists have been unveiled our expectation is that people will start talking about the awards. They become the talking point which will be trending in the news,” he said.
The head of the adjudication committee, Steve Vickers stressed that the process of selecting national and international competitors was a difficult task. However, the committee did its best to guarantee that transparency and balance prevails.
“The evaluation process was not an easy job for judges but all measures were put in place to ensure that there was transparency in as much as the selection of national and international women and men who excelled in the sporting field was concerned,” he said.
There are eleven categories in the 2019 ANSA awards which include Sports Woman of the Year, Sportsman of the Year, Sportsman of the Year with Disability, Coach of the year and Team of the Year among others. The nominees comprises of the Senior Netball Team (The Gems), Cricket Senior Women’s Team (The Lady Chevrons), and Bocce Special Olympics Team who are expected to battle it out for the top award.
In her closing remarks,the Chairperson of the SRC Marketing and Business Development Committee, Mrs Karen Mutasa applauded all the partners of SRC for their support and assured all the sponsors that their contributions will be managed in an ethical and professional manner for mutual benefit.
