Banket woman arrested for child dumping

Banket – A 32-year-old single mother was last week arrested for child dumping.

The woman had dumped her week-year-old son into the crocodile-infested Mazvikadei Dam.

A passer-by heard the child crying sound coming from the river bed.

The woman took a man’s trousers and wrapped the child before she threw him into the dam. Luckily, reeds on the dam side prevented the child from drowning in the water.

After hearing the sound of a crying baby, the man in the company of some nearby villagers took him out and a police report was made at Banket Police Station.

An investigation led to the arrest of the 32-year-old woman, Matinetsa Gurura who said she had dumped the child as she cannot fend for him.

“I don’t have anything to give the child. His father refused paternity. I tried even to get rid of the pregnancy once and failed,” the emotional mother said during an interview at the police station.

The child is in stable condition and is currently being taken care of at Banket District Hospital
