The Ministry of Public Service, Labour, and Social Welfare is currently in Masvingo carrying out an employment initiative program for the youths as a response to low labour absorption capacity within local industries.

In an interview with Spiked Online Media, Dr. Edmos Mtetwa, the Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour, and Social Welfare, said the exercise is meant to address challenges brought about by low labour uptake, offer a reference guide for the unemployed youths for better career choices, and assist them to come up with project proposals.

“The thrust of Career Guidance and Counselling is to focus on and directly address the challenges ushered by low labour absorption capacity within our industries and offer reference guide for the unemployed youths to readily make informed career choices for what is working.

“This program is, therefore, an employment initiative for youths to come up with project proposals in their areas which seeks to empower them with sustainable livelihoods,” said Dr. Mtetwa

He clarified that the registration exercise for job seekers is also underway with youths required to bring forth their certificates for verification.

“One of the Department of Employment Services and Promotion’s core mandates is to carry out registration and placement of job seekers around the country. Therefore, our department is already on the ground in Masvingo Province going around registering all job seekers and when vacancies arise they can be placed,” said Dr. Mtetwa.

He emphasised that registration does not guarantee automatically getting a job.

“Registration is however not a guarantee that one gets a job. It is not automatic but as a department, we do job canvassing for our jobseekers and we place our jobseekers when vacancies arise,” added Dr. Mtetwa

The initiative will run throughout the year across all country’s provinces on dates to be provided by the department.
