Ms. Chido Cleopatra Mpemba, the African Union Commission Chairperson’s Special Envoy on Youth Affairs, is in Zimbabwe for a one-week Youth Symposium and training program focused on climate change.
The event to be held in Bulawayo aims to empower young people to address climate challenges & promote climate action.
“As the Youth Envoy, it is my duty to champion change on issues affecting Africa’s youth. I am convening this event and supporting the participation of 40 young people from across Zimbabwe and some coming from other parts of Africa, including Nigeria, and South Africa. The young people will learn about this important cause.
“The symposium will provide them with information on future opportunities and bring their voices to global governance related to climate change such as the Africa Climate Summit, UN Summit of the Future, and Cop29,” Ms. Mpemba said upon arrival at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport.
Delegates from various youth associations, clubs, networks, and rural communities will be participating, promoting inclusivity. Representatives from the various ministries in Government have also been invited to interact with young people in the symposium.
Ms. Mpemba will conclude the youth symposium with a tree-planting day in Bulawayo. This activity encourages young people to take climate action in their communities and offset carbon footprints.
Ms. Mpemba has actively campaigned for climate change action among young people worldwide and has planted over 500 trees to date in Zimbabwe and across Africa.
