The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) has pledged to intensify the fight against COVID-19 in all its institutions across the country.
This was confirmed at the handover of medical items from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and a local detergent manufacturer to the ZPCS at Chikurubi Prisons on Thursday 9 April 2020.
Upon receiving an assortment of items which include thermometers, surgical masks, bathing soap, gloves, knapsack sprayers, hand sanitizers, and moulded respirator masks among others, ZPCS Commissioner-General, Paradzai Zimondi commended the organizations highlighting that the fight against the pandemic needs a collaborative approach.
“The donation from ICRC is highly commended as they have taken it upon themselves to complement government efforts in the fight against coronavirus. As ZPCS we would like o give assurance on the rightful utilization of the donated goods and the donation will no doubt improve our health care system as well as in fighting COVID-19,” said ZPCS Commissioner-General Zimondi.
Cherine Pollini of the ICRC and Medtech’s Mohammed Patel indicated that they are complementing government efforts in the fight against the scourge, as part of their corporate social responsibility.
“We hope this assistance will go a long way in assisting the ZPCS and we will remain in solidarity with the government in the fight against the deadly virus. It is our responsibility as organizations.”
Commissioner General Zimondi highlighted that all the items will be distributed to all Correctional Services around the country as they engage in fumigation of all the correctional service facilities nationally.
