Dates for the Fourth Ordinary Session of the Sixth Parliament of the Pan-African Parliament announced

The Pan-African Parliament (PAP), the legislative arm of the African Union, ha announced that the Fourth Ordinary Session of its Sixth Parliament and related activities will take place from 28 October to 15 November 2024. This final Session of the year will be held under the African Union Theme for 2024: “Educate an African Fit for the 21st Century: Building Resilient Education Systems for Increased Access to Inclusive, Lifelong, Quality, and Relevant Learning in Africa.”

The meetings are open to the media, the general public, National and Regional Parliaments, African Union organs, Member States, and partners, and will take place as follows:

Public Sessions:

  • Strategic Planning Workshop for members of Parliament: 1-2 November 2024 (9am-17h00)
  • Official Opening Ceremony and Swearing-in of New Members: 4 November 2024 (9am-12h30 SAST)
  • Plenary Session: 4-15 November 2024 (9am – 18h00 SAST)
  • Meetings of Permanent Committees: 6 November 2024 (9am – 18h00 SAST)
  • Closing Closing Ceremony: 15 November 2024 (11am – 18h00 SAST)

Closed Sessions:

  • Meetings of the 6th Bureau: 28-29 October 2024
  • Meeting of the Bureau with African Ambassadors in South Africa: 30 October 2024
  • Joint meeting of the PAP Bureau and the Permanent Committee Bureaus and Caucuses: 31 October 2024
  • Orientation Session for New Members of Parliament: 3 November 2024
  • Joint Planning Meeting of all Organs of Parliament: 16 to 17 November 2024

The Pan-African Parliament (PAP), as the continental legislature, serves as a platform for representatives from all African states to engage in discussions and decision-making on the continent’s challenges. The Rules of Procedure of the PAP mandate that the Parliament holds at least two plenary sessions per year.

During these sessions, the plenary reviews reports from various committees and makes recommendations for the Summit of African Heads of State and Government on harmonised policies and law for the continent. The Parliament also receives reports from other AU Organs and African Institutions. The Parliament is composed of 275 members and is headquartered in Midrand, South Africa.
