Chirundu – The border town of Chirundu is set for a major facelift after the local authority acquired equipment through a devolution fund that will assist the local town board in its operations to offer quality service to residents.
Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Hon Marian Chombo, hailed the border town’s administrators for moving in sync with the country’s development agenda.
Minister Chombo commissioned road rehabilitation equipment and skip bins for the town purchased through devolution and the council’s own funds and also commissioned Truck Inn and Market Place Public Ablutions.
The council acquired a front-end loader, D6 Dozer, 15m3 Tipper Truck, and 10 Skip bins.
“The devolution projects which we are commissioned today dovetails well with the country’s national development strategies for attaining an upper middle-income society by 2030. Our government is committed to ensuring that all places in the country are not being left behind in development,” she said.
“President Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa launched a call to action, no compromise to service delivery and I urge Chirundu Town Board as a point of entry into the country to exhibit a high level of cleanliness and world-class service delivery. The skip bins should assist in ensuring we have a clean environment” she said.
The Minister said servicing and rehabilitation of roads, sewer, and water provision were highlighted as some enablers of economic growth. Chirundu Town Board is on the right track through the commissioned projects.
The local authority received US$ 638 982.57 devolution funds and used its resources for the projects.
The Chirundu Truck Inn and Market Place Ablution facilities will go a long way in sprucing up the border town which is one of the busiest entry points in the country which links SADC to the rest of Africa.
Chirundu Local Board Chairperson, Clr Revai Chaoma, said the new equipment will help lower the cost of service delivery in the town.
“We are happy as this equipment will go a long way in ensuring we provide quality service delivery to our people and this will assist the council to timeously work on road rehabilitation needs,” he said.
