The famous women’s event, Doek and Slay, has been making waves in Zimbabwe’s entertainment scene since its inception in 2023. This project was officially launched in Harare last month and has taken the entertainment circles by storm due to its large turnouts.
According to the event organizers, they identified a gap in celebrating and acknowledging African culture, heritage, diversity, fashion, food, music, and dance.
“This innovative event concept has created a safe space for women to enjoy entertainment, self-expression, and socio-business networking in the absence of men.
“The idea behind Doek and Slay was born out of the realization that mixed-gender public entertainment events in Zimbabwe remain male-dominated, leaving women hesitant to attend due to safety concerns and fear of harassment. We came up with Doek & Slay with a vision to showcase diverse cultures, push boundaries, and make the arts accessible to all,” the organizers said.
Doek and Slay seeks to provide an entertainment platform safe and conducive for women, promote and export local music and fashion, allow women to celebrate African culture, heritage, and diversity, provide platforms and opportunities for women’s economic empowerment, foster a supportive digital community connecting women, and encourage shared responsibility in promoting women’s wellness and mental health.
“We look forward to working with the government, the arts industry, civil society, the corporate world, entrepreneurs, and regional and international community, to promote participation and access to entertainment platforms by all men, women, and girls as well as people with disabilities,” they added.
The event has managed to create a highly appreciated atmosphere among women, fostering unity, peace, and friendships. The event has also attracted multitudes of women as patrons, created employment for artists, and facilitated business opportunities for women entrepreneurs and service providers.
“We have also made our mark in other provinces like Masvingo and Bulawayo, as well as in Zambia. As Doek and Slay continues to revolutionize Zimbabwe’s entertainment scene. We remain committed to promoting participation and access to entertainment platforms for all, regardless of gender or disability.”
As part of their plans, the organizers are preparing themselves for strategic and corporate partnerships and calling for government support towards their brand, Doek & Slay, as they anticipate going regional and global. They are dedicated to investing in the arts and promoting and exporting Zimbabwean culture, making Zimbabwe a festival destination.
The next event is scheduled to take place on December 15 at Alexandra Sports Club, featuring a star-studded lineup including Jah Prayzah, Tamy Moyo, Enzo Ishal, and Master H.
