As the COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the media industry, with newsrooms struggling to maintain viability due to various challenges, Dr. Paul Tungwarara, the Presidential Investment Advisor, has come to the rescue of journalists
The pandemic led to a significant decline in advertising revenue, which is a primary source of income for many media outlets. Additionally, the shift to digital media has disrupted traditional business models, making it challenging for media companies to adapt and remain financially sustainable.
Cognisant of such challenges, Dr. Tungwarara made a generous donation of 20 high-tech phones to journalists yesterday.
In a move aimed at enhancing digital communication, Dr. Tungwarara has gifted 20 state-of-the-art phones, including Samsung S25 and iPhone 16 Pro models, to journalists who attended the Mash West war veterans’ empowerment program that he is spearheading.
“This donation is intended to facilitate easy social media engagement and reporting and they will be utilized to showcase the accomplishments and initiatives of the Second Republic, led by H.E President ED  Mnangagwa and his administration. The goal is to highlight the positive impact of their policies and programs on the nation.
“In addition, 32 comrades are now on a payroll getting US$300 per month for promoting EDWORKS.  Also, a journalist fund for selected individuals who have been promoting EDWORKS on social media has been created,” revealed Christine Charumbira from the Masvingo ZANU PF information department.
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the shift to digital media, changing consumer behavior and preferences. Media outlets must now compete with social media platforms and other online sources for audience attention, making it harder to maintain viability.
The pandemic also highlighted the challenge of combating misinformation and disinformation. At the moment, media outlets must invest in fact-checking and verification processes to maintain credibility and trust with their audiences.
To remain viable, media outlets must innovate and adapt to the changing media landscape. This includes exploring new business models, investing in digital infrastructure, and developing innovative content formats.
Overall, the media industry faces significant challenges in maintaining viability post-COVID-19. However, by adapting to changing consumer behavior, investing in innovation, and prioritizing credibility and trust, media outlets can navigate these challenges and remain sustainable.
