Value Creation Challenge (VCC) is offering a lifeline to aspiring business leaders across Zimbabwe, by providing an opportunity for youth involvement in its innovative incubation programme that aims to reinforce innovation and entrepreneurship in Zimbabwe.

Now in its fifth year, VCC is a nationwide incubation program by the Eight2Five Innovation Hub, powered by Old Mutual and several partners, including the British Council, the British Embassy, Zimbabwe Agricultural Development Trust (ZADT), SNV, Delta Corporation, the Swiss Embassy, and the Embassy of Sweden.

Lillian Mbayiwa, the Group Marketing, Public Affairs, and Sustainability Executive at Old Mutual Zimbabwe, said entrepreneurs are often armed with brilliant ideas but face numerous obstacles from funding shortages, market competition, and the struggle to connect with the right resources with many finding themselves overwhelmed by the complexities of turning a vision into reality.

It continues its mission to empower startups and early-stage businesses, providing them with crucial resources and support.

For the past five years, VCC has been instrumental in helping entrepreneurs navigate the often-turbulent waters of launching and growing a business. The program focuses on those with innovative prototypes or minimum viable products (MVPs) and targets businesses in the early market stage. It facilitates growth through product incubation, strategic business development, and access to valuable networks, including potential investors and pre-seed funding.

Currently, the VCC team is traveling across Zimbabwe to conduct business clinics aimed at helping entrepreneurs refine their business models and discover new opportunities. The business clinics have already taken place in various locations, such as Kadoma, Murehwa, Mutare, Masvingo, Mwenezi, Zvishavane, Gweru, Gokwe, Harare, Chinhoyi, Marondera, Nyanga, and Rusape. In May, the team will bring the Business Clinics to Matebeleland, focusing on Bulawayo, Esigodini, Matopos, and Lupane. By engaging directly with entrepreneurs, VCC provides personalized guidance and fosters a sense of community among participants.

“The Value Creation Challenge is a testament to our commitment to nurturing homegrown talent. We believe that with the right support, these entrepreneurs can not only succeed but also contribute significantly to the economy,” said Mbayiwa.

As entrepreneurs prepare to apply for VCC 5, which opened its application portal on April 15 and will run till May 31, they are encouraged to present proof of their existing businesses and the viability of their products. VCC 5 is specifically geared towards startup enterprises, reinforcing its focus on tangible business operations. The program operates under four key pillars: Innovative Tech, Creative Industries, Emerging Industries, and Sustainability.

“Empowering entrepreneurs is vital for economic growth. The Value Creation Challenge (VCC 5) is not just about supporting businesses; it’s about fostering a culture of innovation and resilience in Zimbabwe. We are excited to witness the transformative impact that the participating businesses will have on their communities,” Mbayiwa said.

To qualify for VCC 5, applicants must be Zimbabwean citizens aged 18 or older and must be the business owners themselves, as applications on behalf of third parties will not be accepted. Additionally, businesses must be no older than three years at the time of application. Shortlisted candidates will need to be available for at least four days each month from June to September 2025.

Supporting Marginalized Communities and Encouraging Female Founders the Value Creation Challenge is committed to supporting marginalized communities, including youths, women, and persons with disabilities. This year, VCC is making a concerted effort to encourage female founders to apply, recognizing the vital role women play in driving economic growth and innovation. By promoting gender balance and inclusivity, VCC aims to create a vibrant and dynamic entrepreneurial landscape that harnesses the full potential of Zimbabwe’s talent pool.

As the Value Creation Challenge prepares to welcome new applications, it stands as a beacon of hope for entrepreneurs ready to elevate their businesses. With a strong commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration, VCC 5 continues to build a thriving ecosystem where businesses can flourish and make a meaningful impact in the market. This initiative not only empowers individuals but also contributes to the broader economic landscape of Zimbabwe, making it an exciting time for entrepreneurs across the nation.
