Nelson Chamisa, the embattled leader of Zimbabwe’s opposition, remains steadfast in his faith, believing God will ultimately bring justice and vindication, despite facing unprecedented challenges.
Chamisa’s troubles began when he lost control of the MDC Alliance to Douglas Mwonzora, a move widely seen as orchestrated by the ruling ZANU-PF party through the courts. The courts, allegedly infiltrated by ZANU-PF, ruled in favor of Mwonzora, allowing him to seize the party’s headquarters and assets.
Undeterred, Chamisa launched a new party, the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), only to face another setback. An unknown figure, Sengezo Tshabangu, emerged claiming leadership of the CCC, sparking suspicions of being a ZANU-PF proxy.
Chamisa’s supporters have faced brutal suppression, with many reportedly arrested, abducted, killed, or disappeared. Despite these dangers, Chamisa remains resolute, citing his faith as his anchor.
“I trust in God’s plan and timing,” Chamisa said in a recent statement. “We will not be deterred by these obstacles. Our fight for democracy and justice will continue.”
Recently, Chamisa faced criticism for not calling for demonstrations during the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit, with journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and political commentator Ibbo Mandaza accusing him of inaction. However, Chamisa’s caution stems from a desire to protect lives, recalling the 2018 August shootings and arrests.
Observers see Chamisa’s faith as a source of strength, inspiring hope in a nation weary of political turmoil. “Chamisa’s unwavering faith is a beacon of light in these dark times,” said a local activist. “His commitment to justice and democracy is unshakeable.”
