Harare-based Zimdancehall artiste Empress Massina (31), real name Ericah Sabi, strongly believes marginalization is a major impediment to the success of female artistes in her genre. The young musician shared her thoughts during a recent online interview with this publication.
Empress Massina is of the opinion that female Zimdancehall musicians are often sidelined by music promoters and other stakeholders in the music industry.
“They (promoters and producers) exclude us as if we are not even there. Some of them take advantage because we are females. For you to be part of a promo, some say you should date us first so sometimes. Because of that, we end up choosing to stay at home,” Empress Massina lamented.
The female chanter launched her professional music career in 2014. She released her debut album Chikondi (a 12-track compilation) the same year. At present, she has 5 albums to her name.
Popular for her tracks Mukwende, Ndauya, and Pasipemvura, Empress Massina said she is inspired by a number of local and international female dancehall artistes.
