Renowned Zimbabwean asthma allergy and immunology specialists, Gamma Allergy and Immunology Laboratories (GAIL) has received prestigious recognition from the Southern African Development Community Accreditation Service (SADCAS) and the Standards Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ) for outstanding quality services in these areas.
Speaking at the certificates handover ceremony in Harare today, Professor Elopy Sibanda, the Managing Director of the Gamma Allergy and Immunology Laboratories who is also an allergy specialist said he was humbled by the fact that his organisation is the first referral centre to be bestowed such an honour in Zimbabwe.
“Gamma Allergy and Immunology Laboratories is the centre of excellence in allergy profiling and management of immune dysfunction disorders through the clinic, The Twin Palms Medical Centre. This centre thrives to provide care of rare conditions such as systemic sclerosis and systemic lupus erythematosus.
“The certification and accreditation we were awarded today by such respectable institutions affirms that our quest for the provision of high quality medical services is being recognised by international accreditation bodies,” Prof Sibanda said.
Speaking at the same occasion, SADCAS Chief Executive Officer, Maureen Primrose Mutasa called for an expansion of the scope of accreditation to include other areas such as immuno-fluorescence services.
“SADCAS is currently exploring the accreditation of diagnostic imaging service providers. The Medical/Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Scheme (MIAS) which we aim to launch early 2021 will help service providers to ensure that their patients consistently receive high quality services delivered by competent personnel working in a safe environment. The accreditation of all these laboratories as well as diagnostic imaging service providers is critical in any health care delivery system,” Mrs Mutasa said.
In a speech read on his behalf, the Deputy Minister of Health and Chid Care, Dr John Mangwiro said he was intrigued with the fact that the Gamma Allergy and Immunology Laboratories thrives for excellence in timely and high quality delivery of medical laboratory services to the Zimbabwean population. This would assist the government of Zimbabwe to realise the attainment of the universal health coverage.
He emphasised on ensuring quality, affordable medical laboratory service to include the general population. He encouraged health sector players to emulate the works of GAIL so as to reduce morbidity and mortality of these rare conditions.
