The founder of EatOut Movement Henry Chigama led a team of volunteers for the 439km Walk For The Homeless from Bulawayo to Harare which took them 15 days from 1 November to 15 November 2021.

During the walk, the team stopped in several towns where instead of taking a break they would open their mobile soup kitchen and feed the homeless in those areas in spite of their exhaustion.

In Norton, they visited Katanga at the ZAOGA church soup kitchen.

“We were received by Honorable Temba Mliswa and his team. We reached out to thirteen homeless people.

“They shared their problems and how they would want to be assisted so that they change their lives. Among them was a talented musician who needs help with a recording deal, others wanted support to start businesses, and some needed help to go back to school. There are problems of hunger, lack of shelter, increases in drug abuse, and lack of clothes,” Chigama said.

“Homelessness is increasing in our communities and the sad part is it is now even difficult to see as most people affected are shying away from seeking help. After engaging with them we then did a soup kitchen offering bread and drinks. They expressed their gratitude saying this was probably their only meal into the next day.”

The team then walked their victory lap into Harare where they were welcomed by the Warren Park Councillor Tichaona Mhetu who represented the Harare Mayor at Theater in the Park in the Harare Gardens.

The main goal of the walk is to seek donations that will be used to build the Hub of Hope for the homeless in order to attain vocational skills and integrate them into the community with much-needed skills that would allow them to fend for themselves.

On sore feet and high spirits after the long walk, they continued what they do the best, feeding the needy by opening a soup kitchen in Hatcliff on Monday just seven days after the victory walk.

“All donations from the 439km Walk For The Homeless will go to charity. Please Donate whatever you can. “The currency is love” famously used by the Doc himself, Dr Namadingo. Let’s wish them luck and support all the way.”
