DStv a subscribers will also have additional access to the IAAF World Athletics Championships, with SuperSport Variety 3 tiered down to be available from the DStv Access package and up, while SuperSport GOtv Select 1 will be tiered down to be available from the GOtv Plus package and up.
This will be the 18th edition of the World Athletics Championships and the first since Doha 2019 (with a scheduled event in 2021 postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent shifting of the Olympic Games from 2020 to last year).
The World Championships is the most prestigious competition outside of the Olympics and claiming a medal is the dream of all track and field athletes from around the world.
From an African perspective, there will be many top contenders vying to become the world champion in their particular discipline. For example, Kenya’s Abel Kipsang will be amongst the favourites for glory in the Men’s 1500m, having beaten compatriot Timothy Cheruiyot in the recent national trials.
“It was a tactical race, a real fight for positions. From here the target is gold [at the World Championships],” said Kipsang, relieved to have qualified first for his first Worlds after finishing fourth in Tokyo last year behind the gold medallist Jakob Ingebrigtsen.
Some of the most hotly-contested categories will be the Women’s sprints, with Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson running the third-fastest 200m (21.55) in history last month to complete the sprint double at the country’s national championships and lay down the gauntlet for her compatriots Elaine Thompson-Herah (22.05) and world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (22.14).
“Honestly, I didn’t expect to run this fast,” said Jackson. “I knew I was in good shape and when I spoke to the coach yesterday, he wanted a proper execution and the curve was one of the areas discussed. I think I did well on the curve, my coach told me to run the first 100m hard and do whatever I want afterwards. I am just grateful.”
Another star to watch is German long jump queen Malaika Mihambo, who is the current Olympic, World and European champion in her discipline and looking to continue her dominance at the upcoming event in Eugene.
“For me, the competition is only over after the sixth attempt,” the 28-year-old said. “I’m all in until the competition is over. Whether it’s the sixth round, or the third, it doesn’t matter: I’m giving it my all. Even if the odds don’t seem that good, I don’t give up.”
