The African Union Commissioner recognised in Addis Ababa that the efforts that have been made in food security, sustainable environmental practices, rural development, and the blue economy have had a tangible impact on the entire continent.

Josefa Sacko, who was speaking at a meeting with members of the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment, said that the last eight years had been an incredible journey, full of challenges, achievements, and invaluable lessons.

‘None of this would have been possible without the unwavering commitment, dedication, and professionalism of the extraordinary team that has supported me throughout this mandate,’ she emphasised.

The Angolan diplomat considered that DARBE has evolved significantly and has become one of the AU’s most respected organisations, winning the admiration of partners and stakeholders, a remarkable transformation that is testimony to the collective effort, experience, and passion of all those who have participated directly and indirectly in this process.

“As we move on to new leadership, I take this opportunity to recognise and celebrate the significant milestones we have achieved together,” he said.

She stressed that the summit on climate change in Africa, the summit on fertilisers and soil health, and the recently adopted Kampala declaration, as well as the 10-year action plan, will serve as a guiding framework for the continued transformation of agriculture on the continent, guaranteeing a prosperous and food-secure future.

“I am proud to have contributed to this mission alongside such an exceptional team, you are the true pillars of this institution and for that, I extend my sincere thanks to you,” she said in farewell after serving two terms in the multilateral organisation.

She expressed confidence that her successor will continue to work on the established solid foundation to fulfill the desire for a prosperous Africa.

“Change is inevitable and, as I prepare to hand over this portfolio to my successor – who, for the first time since 2003, will be a man – I offer him my warmest congratulations.

“In conclusion, I would like to make it clear that we must continue to make extra efforts to achieve excellence, leaving a legacy for future generations.”
