The Indian Government yesterday donated USD100000 worth of COVID-19 medicines to Zimbabwe despite the country’s struggle to contain the pandemic having604,641 COVID-19 cases confirmed 17,843 dead and 359,860 recoveries.
The Indian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr. Rungsungh Maskui handed over the donation to Dr. John Mangwiro Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care at Napharm.
“We are handing over a consignment of medicines which are specific to treatment of COVID-19 cases. Separate consignment of 11 medicines containing chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine is also expected very soon” said the Ambassador.
He said due to the delayed resumption of domestic air services and continued non-availability of International air services, the arrival of all items could not be at the same time.“Needless also to say that the balance of medicines worth $1.6 million for donation to Zimbabwe will be procured after the pandemic situation improves.
“I would also like to inform you that 10 ambulances for donation to Government of Zimbabwe are under procurement and will be shipped to Zimbabwe in mid-August 2020”, Ambassador Masakui said. The Ambassador reiterated India’s commitment to the excellent bilateral relationship and continued support to the government and people of Zimbabwe.
Receiving the medical goods, Dr. Mangwiro appreciated the Indian Government’s noble gesture saying the medication comes even at the nick of time when Zimbabwe is battling diarrheal diseases in Bulawayo.
“Some of the medicines which we have received can also be used in Bulawayo where there was an outbreak of diarrhea. We are also thankful that other medicines such as hydroxychloroquine will be arriving soon,” he said.
“You also said 10 ambulances being procured for us will arrive in one and a half months, we are very grateful for that.”He said, “What you have done for us is similar to when one is drowning but holding the hand of another in the same situation. Our deepest condolences to the Indian nation for the lost life.”.
