The Irene Science expo, Careers’ Day, and awards ceremony event held at Irene Christian College in Marlborough, Harare, was a resounding success.
The event, which took place on 27th and 28th June, saw the participation of 14 schools, including prestigious institutions such as Prince Edward School, Mabvuku High School, Milestone College, Sacred Heart College, and others from as far as Ruwa, such as Cliffs College and Milestone from Rusape.
The event was a platform for students to showcase their innovative projects in various categories, including Programming, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Pharmaceuticals, Natural Products, Cosmetology, Agriculture, Environmental Science, Chemical and Mechanical Engineering, Microbiology, Genetics, Electrical Engineering, and Energy and Power.
The registration deadline for the event was 14th June 2024, and it offered great prizes, including cash and awards.
Stakeholders such as universities, companies, and embassies were also in attendance to support and equip the learners.
Mr. Albert Zinyemba, the headmaster of Irene Christian College said that the two-day event went on smoothly as it was the highlight of students’ critical thinking, innovation, and collaboration skills.
“The projects exhibited were of very high quality, with adjudicators from HIT remarking that they resembled those of master’s students at university. The awards ceremony was graced by Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education officials and the guest of honor was the respectable Chief Scientist at the Zimbabwe Geospatial and Space Agency. The projects were of high caliber and the whole awards ceremony was so good that the pictures and videos were requested to be showcased by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education at the agricultural show. Otherwise, we expect an even bigger and better event next year,” said Mr Zinyemba.
Irene Christian College Innovation Hub Patron, Ms. Rumbidzai Goto said the expo presented a platform to showcase their innovative projects and they hope to see students developing projects that will be used to develop Zimbabwe.
“The expo proved to be a platform for the youth to showcase their innovative projects, and I desire to see these projects being developed to save and improve our nation,” she said.
Mr. Gerald Machiri, the esteemed principal and visionary leader, issued a stirring call to action. With unwavering conviction, he urged the young minds to embark on a quest for scientific innovation, challenging them to devise projects that would address the pressing challenges of our modern world.
“At Irene Christian College, we believe in the power of innovation to shape a better future. I encourage all our students to channel their creativity and intellect into developing groundbreaking science projects that address pressing global challenges. Your potential knows no bounds, and while I am impressed with your projects, I challenge you to push harder, think bigger, and strive for excellence. You are the architects of tomorrow, and it is through your relentless pursuit of knowledge and innovation that we will build a brighter, more sustainable world for generations to come,” said Mr. Gerald Machiri.

Category 6: Kuwadzana 1 High, Kuwadzana I High, Heritage School, and Irene Christian College
The event was a testament to the creativity and innovation of the young generation, with a strong emphasis on the application of artificial intelligence and robotics across various fields.
