The Mellon Foundation recently awarded the National Gallery of Zimbabwe a grant of USD 500,000 through its Visionary Leadership strategy, to support the museum’s infrastructure. The grant shall be utilized to refurbish the Gallery’s amenities, encompassing the installation of a brand new Air Conditioning and Climate Control System; Fire Suppression System, Access Control System, and Security Systems.

Founded in 1969, the Mellon Foundation believes that the arts and humanities are where we express our complex humanity and that everyone deserves the beauty, transcendence, and freedom that can be found there. Through Mellon’s grants, they seek to build just communities enriched by meaning and empowered by critical thinking, where ideas and imagination can thrive

In his statement, the Executive Director of the NGZ, Raphael Chikukwa, stated that the grant is a tool for the Gallery to stand at par with other international institutions. The grant has come as a lifesaving mechanism after years of seeking partnerships that could encourage the rehabilitation of the museum’s amenities. Chikukwa stated that the NGZ is grateful to the Mellon Foundation for this generous contribution to infrastructural support for the museum.

The bequest will take the NGZ towards world-class status, and as a National treasure, contribute to the proper management and preservation of the Permanent Collection for the foreseeable future. The NGZ is committed to promoting, developing, and safeguarding Zimbabwe’s visual arts while fostering a vibrant art ecosystem, and has received the grant in line with the Mellon Foundation’s Mission to build just communities enriched by meaning and empowered by critical thinking, where ideas and imagination can thrive.
