At 46 years old, Dallas Oberholzer is an unlikely Olympian, but tomorrow Africa’s best men’s skater will make his debut in skateboarding’s park event at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The Johannesburg-based skater has no illusions – “I won’t win a medal,” he said – but he’s part of the sport’s new mainstream and happy to be among its Olympic pioneers.

Yet it is track and field where many of Africa’s aspirants will hope to turn ambition into precious metal, among them South Africa’s mens 4 x 100m relay quertet and Kyle Blignaut, a surprise shot put finalist.

World 1500m champion Timothy Cheruiyot will attempt to add Olympic gold to his collection, with veteran Isaac Makwala of Botswana, a frequent medalist at major events, in the running for the 400m.
