Dr. Anxious Masuka, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Lands, Agriculture Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, in terms of section 21 of the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, and Remedies Act [Chapter 18:12], has compelled farmers to use wheat stover as feed.

In Statutory Instrument (SI) 159 of 2024 cited as the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds and Remedies (Wheat stover as feed) Notice, 2024, the Minister declared wheat stover as stock feed in terms of section 2 of the Act.

In explaining the SI, Prof Obert Jiri, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Agriculture said the decision was taken to ensure that wheat must contribute to the livestock feed security.

“We, therefore, compel the wheat farmers to consider and to take wheat stover as livestock stock feed. Starting immediately, all wheat farmers who grow wheat and who are harvesting and are going to be harvesting in October must deem the wheat stover as livestock feed. That means that the wheat stover must now be built and restored for livestock feeding.

“This is very important in light of a shortage of feed in the wheat farming areas. Farmers should not then bury that wheat stover. Instead, they should convert it into livestock feed. We have technologies that enable the wheat stover to be enhanced in terms of its value in terms of feed value, Prof Jiri said.
