The nation has been plunged into mourning as renowned Kadoma-based philanthropist, Angela Haritatos – the wife of the late former Muzvezve legislator and ZANU PF central committee member, Peter Haritatos – died yesterday afternoon in Harare. She was affectionately known as AmaiGeorge by friends, business associates, and the Kadoma community.

AmaiGeorge was 59.

According to the Deputy Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement, Honourable Vangelis Haritatos ( the deceased’s son), MaiGeorge passed on at the Trauma Centre, a private medical facility in Borrowdale. The legislator said his mother’s death was due to cardiac arrest as a result of COVID-19 related complications.

“She had fought COVID-19 and had been in hospital for about 4 weeks fighting the damage that it did on her heart, lungs and kidneys. She died late this afternoon at the Trauma Center from cardiac arrest,” he said during an online interview last night.

Condolence messages on Facebook and other media platforms, soon after Angela’s passing, showed the great philanthropic work she did in and around Kadoma. In an effort to improve the lives of the marginalized, she annually sponsored 40 children at different levels of learning, from primary school children to those who would have managed to get to university.

Expressing her sorrow Hon. Vangelis Haritos’ wife, Amanda had this to say: “I will never forget your unconditional love, your wisdom, your advice, but most importantly, the way you loved. Thank you, mom, for loving me the way you did. Thank you for loving your grandchildren wholeheartedly and never missing anything in their lives. You will live on in us all forever.”

AmaiGeorge died just 19 days after the demise of her 77-year-old husband. Her spouse’s death was also attributed to Covid-19 complications.

She is survived by her three children and nine grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
