Harare, Zimbabwe – In a heartfelt evening of gratitude, solidarity, and inspiration, the National Blood Service Zimbabwe (NBSZ) hosted its annual World Blood Donor Day Fundraising Dinner, honoring the everyday heroes whose selfless donations save lives, and the partners who support the mission to maintain a safe and reliable blood supply across the country.
Addressing the distinguished guests, NBSZ Board Member, Prof Takafira Mduluza welcomed representatives from the private sector, the health community, and the media fraternity, emphasizing their critical roles in sustaining the national blood program.
“Your commitment to giving back to the community is truly inspiring,” he said. “Tonight, we recognize your partnership and celebrate the spirit of giving that blood donation represents.”
The dinner served not only as a celebration but also as a fundraising platform to support the procurement of essential supplies such as blood bags, testing reagents, and advanced equipment needed to ensure the safety and availability of blood—particularly in underserved rural areas. The funds raised are expected to directly impact the NBSZ’s efforts to enhance transfusion services and healthcare outcomes across Zimbabwe.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of several prestigious awards to organizations and individuals whose exceptional contributions have helped bolster the NBSZ’s capacity and reach:

A Standing Ovation for the Platinum Partner
The evening’s most prestigious recognition—the Corporate Platinum Sponsor Award—was presented to the National AIDS Council (NAC). Their monumental support in 2024 included donations of 100,000 blood bags valued at USD 816,000; test kits worth USD 240,000; a NAT testing machine and reagents valued at USD 280,000; and additional NAT reagents in 2025 worth USD 238,000.
Their generosity has not only enhanced the safety of the national blood supply but has also set a powerful example of corporate commitment to public health.
“This award is a testament to NAC’s unwavering dedication to saving lives and improving healthcare outcomes in Zimbabwe,” said Ms Lucy Marowa, the CEO of NBSZ as the room erupted in applause.
Looking Ahead
The NBSZ reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with all stakeholders to build a resilient and responsive blood program. The World Blood Donor Day Fundraising Dinner concluded with a call to action: for more individuals, institutions, and industries to step forward, support the cause, and help secure the future of blood safety in Zimbabwe.
