International energy infrastructure developer, Power Giants is using music to preach against child abuse as a medium of communication that reaches a wider audience with a view of influencing policy change and societal attitude towards the vice.

Speaking to this publication, Power Giants Director, Edzai Kachirekwa called on all stakeholders to support the song that denounces child abuse, a social ill that is sadly increasing despite awareness on dangers associated with the practice.

“There are many forms of child abuse cases including denying children access to education, health, shelter, and food. The most common form of child abuse that is of concern to us is the early or forced marriage among children. We all have a duty to address this social ill. It starts with the family, the school, the village, the ward, the district, the province going up to the national level.

“We are saying let’s all come together to address early or forced marriages among our children. We have taken the initiative to try and address this menace through a song in partnership with popular musicians. I appreciate the efforts by the Parliament of Zimbabwe to craft laws against child marriage. The support of organisations like Plan International, Musasa, ZiCHIRe, UN agencies like ILO, UNFPA, UNICEF and UNWomen, to mention a few, is most welcome. We are saying, come support us in this initiative until we win,” Kachirekwa said.

Power Giants Zimbabwe has roped in top musicians who include Fungisayi Pazvakavapano-Mashavave, Minister Michael Mahendere, Sulumani Chimbetu, Selmor Mtukudzi, Progress Chipfumo, Sandra Ndebele, and Anita who are supposed to jointly compose a song that denounces early and forced child marriages.

In an interview with journalist Albert Masaka recently, Kachirekwa was quoted saying “The next generation needs protection. Daily, we hear and read stories of child abuse and child marriages. This has to stop now. I experienced a tough life when growing up and managed to overcome those harsh experiences, as a graduate. Me and my wife, Evelyn have decided to take a stand.

” I sat down with Minister Michael Mahendere and a few others as a production team and decided to do a song that should make an impact at the national level in the fight against child abuse. We are saying a big no to this vice through the song which should be out in quite soon.”.
