Speakers at the upcoming Technology Information Confederation Africa (TICON Africa) Conference 2024 include respected names in the ICT industry as well as senior officials from member countries.

TICON Africa will be held at the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa between 25 and 27 September alongside the Marketing Society of Kenya’s symposium. The two events will bring together a tangible showcase of how ICT can help drive marketing strategies through the best use of data, business intelligence, and machine learning.

A particular coup for the events is that the speaker at the joint plenary closing session is Nyimpini Mabunda. Mabunda has more than 25 years of experience in leading major consumer goods, food franchise, and telecoms businesses across Africa and the United Kingdom.

Bringing together the best of both worlds, Mabunda also has experience in melding technology with marketing, with a background that includes strategy, marketing, sales, digital transformation, data analytics, business turnaround, private equity, stakeholder management, and market development.

“Mabunda, who has an MBA from the University of Cape Town, is a well-rounded leader with an impressive track record of driving results and talent development,” says Dr Jannie Zaaiman, Secretary General of TICON Africa.

“We are delighted to have someone of his calibre join us, especially given the fact that he is internationally renowned, having been a judge and panellist at Stanford University’s Africa Business Forum start up initiative, MC at the official Nelson Mandela Memorial in Uganda, and moderator at the ILLA Africa lawmakers conference,” he adds.

Mabunda was recently appointed Chair of the US Chamber’s US-South Africa Business Council, the premier Washington-based business organisation dedicated to the economic relationship between the United States and South Africa.

Globally recognised visionary in modern marketing, Hermawan Kartajaya, will be opening the joint plenary event for both conferences. He is renowned for his collaboration with Philip Kotler, the Father of Modern Marketing, in co-authoring twelve influential books since 1998. As the Founder and Chair of MCorp, Southeast Asia’s leading professional services firm in marketing consulting, research, and training, and the holding company of MarkPlus Incorporated and MarkPlus Institute, he has played a pivotal role in shaping marketing practices across the region.

“Kartajaya’s visionary contributions have earned him esteemed accolades, including recognition as one of the ‘50 Gurus Who Have Shaped the Future of Marketing’ by the United Kingdom’s Chartered Institute of Marketing in 2003, and the Distinguished Global Leadership Award from the Pan-Pacific Business Association at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2009,” says Marketing Society of Kenya chairperson, Zuhura Odhiambo.

“To have Kartajaya join us will set the stage for a fantastic conference,” she adds.

Kartajaya has also been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement in Marketing Award from Jawa Pos, an honorary doctorate (Doctor Honoris Causa in 2010) from ITS Surabaya, and Honorary Fellowship Awards from the Marketing Institute of Singapore (MIS) and the Institute of Marketing Malaysia (IMM).

Delegates at TICON Africa will also be addressed by its President, David Gowu from Ghana; the Secretary General of the ICT Association of Kenya (ICTAK), Dr Adrian Kamotho Njenga; Derrick Diaba from MTN; Agness Gathaiya, who is the Google Country Director for Kenya and East Africa; as well as several government officials representing key ICT bodies from TICON Africa member countries such as Kenya, Botswana, Zambia, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and Uganda.

TICON Africa is the umbrella body for African ICT professional associations. Its conference is being held in collaboration with ICTAK.

This year’s TICON Africa theme is Advancing ICT Solutions for Sustainable Development in Africa, which will be broken down into three sub-themes, namely:

  • Strengthening Digital Infrastructure and Access
  • Harnessing the Power of AI and Big Data
  • Addressing Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Challenges

“For ICT professionals seeking to expand their network and grow their understanding of how their counterparts have worked with new technologies such as AI, Internet of Things, robotics, and virtual reality, this conference will be key as we seek to develop standards around this new world,” says Zaaiman.
