The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Extraordinary Summit scheduled for Harare, Zimbabwe on 31 January 2025 will focus on the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) problem, Prof Amon Murwira, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade has said.
“As you know, there are negative developments in the east of the DRC, a lot of violence and conflict and you would remember that His Excellency hosted another summit on this matter and that summit was to extend the mission of Summit DRC but now the Extraordinary Summit is for Heads of State and Government to debate and make decisions on the peace efforts for the Eastern DRC. We are expecting Heads of State and Government from all SADC countries to come and this summit is going to be on Friday the 31st of January 2025.
“So we are now in full throttle preparing for this summit. His Excellency, President Mnangagwa, as the Chairperson of SADC, set the date for Friday 31st of January and the issue is again to be discussed. Our mission is to restore peace and tranquillity in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Instability is bad enough. I don’t think we can say bad, worse, worse. Any instability in the SADC region is an affront to the economic development efforts of the region. Therefore, peace is very important,” Prof Murwira said.
He said the SADC leaders will discuss the extent of the problem on Friday to make decisions on it.
“You would remember that His Excellency Dr. E.D Mnangagwa issued his statement on Monday condemning violence and urging that SADC will take action. So SADC is taking action.
“That’s why there’s a summit on Friday. Everything is set for the meeting and we look forward to the resolution of problems in the eastern part of the DRC. They’ll be arriving at different times but definitely, they’ll meet on Friday,” Prof Murwira added.
