In a series of strategic preparations for the upcoming SADC Industrialization Week (SIW) set to unfold from July 28th to August 2nd, 2024 in Harare, Zimbabwe, yesterday marked a pivotal moment as the Ministry of Industry and Commerce’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Thomas Wushe, convened with ambassadors from SADC member states. This meeting served as a crucial briefing session to outline the ambitious agenda and preparations underway for this prestigious event.
Hosted by the Government of Zimbabwe in collaboration with the SADC Secretariat and the SADC Business Council/Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI), the 7th Annual SADC Industrialization Week according to Dr Wushe promises to be a milestone event. Scheduled to take place at Rainbow Towers in Harare, the SIW aims to propel industrialization efforts across the region, showcase investment opportunities, and foster crucial partnerships among stakeholders in the industrial sector.
The SIW initiative, spearheaded by the private sector under the auspices of the SADC Business Council, coincides with Zimbabwe assuming the chairmanship of the SADC Business Council. This dual leadership role underscores Zimbabwe’s commitment to advancing economic growth and industrial development within the SADC region.
Briefing SADC Member States diplomats, Dr Wushe noted that the SIW agenda is structured over six dynamic days, highlighting key themes and activities that will shape the future of industrialization in Southern Africa. The event kicks off with a Media Awareness Day on July 28th, 2024, featuring insights and engagement on the prestigious SADC Media Awards, setting the stage for robust media coverage and awareness throughout the week.
Day two, on July 29th, will see the focal point shift to an Investment Conference, inaugurated by Zimbabwe’s Honorable Vice President, General (Rtd) Dr. C.G.D.N. Chiwenga. This day aims to foster networking opportunities and facilitate strategic business deals, promoting investment opportunities across all 15 SADC member states.
Following suit on July 30th, day three will be dedicated to Plenary and Parallel Sessions, providing a forum for in-depth discussions on critical industrialization topics, including infrastructure development and economic integration strategies.
The climax of the SIW unfolds on July 31st with an illustrious Official Opening Ceremony graced by His Excellency, President Dr. Emmerson Mnangagwa. This ceremonial day will feature a keynote address and plenary sessions focusing on fostering sustainable industrialization through innovation. A Welcome Cocktail hosted by the Minister of Industry and Commerce will further set the tone for collaborative engagements and celebratory moments.
August 1st will continue the momentum with further Plenary Sessions dedicated to unlocking Zimbabwe’s economic potential and exploring lucrative business opportunities. The day will culminate in a Gala Dinner, Fashion Show, and the esteemed SADC Standards Quality Awards Ceremony, recognizing excellence in industrial practices across the region.
Since its inception in 2016, the SADC Industrialization Week has evolved into a cornerstone event, aligning with the overarching goals of the SADC Industrialization Strategy and Roadmap (2015-2063). This year’s theme, “Promoting Innovation to Unlock Opportunities for Sustainable Economic Growth and Development,” according to Dr Wushe underscores the region’s commitment to transformative industrialization initiatives.
With an expected participation of 300 stakeholders and 150 companies exhibiting their innovations, the SIW is poised to catalyze collaborative efforts toward regional economic prosperity. The event will also feature organized factory visits to prominent local companies, showcasing Zimbabwe’s industrial prowess and potential to global investors.
As preparations continue to unfold, Dr Wushe urged stakeholders to engage actively through the SIW’s dedicated registration portal, ensuring their participation in this pivotal event. With strategic sessions, networking opportunities, and high-level engagements on the horizon, he said the SIW promises to be a catalyst for industrial growth and regional integration across the SADC community.
