Sakunda, Rufaro stadium deal a milestone for development

Local tycoon businessman, Kudakwashe Tagwirei, who owns Sakunda, has entered into an agreement with Harare City Council to lease the derelict Rufaro stadium. It is not the first time, Tagwirei has rescued national projects, with the Dynamos-Harare deal already in progress which has yielded a lot of positive results for the local football game.

The company will carry out a major refurbishment, bringing the stadium to a world-class facility, with many opinion leaders, business leaders hailing the deal.

Contacted for comment, Economist Nhepera praised the deal as progressive and positive towards local football. This could be in line with the 2030 vision, to meet international standards, and achieve a middle-class economy.

The clinched deal resulted in numerous meetings between Sakunda Holdings and Harare City officials on a lease agreement basis, which will result in the refurbishment of the facility to meet FIFA standards, and in return, Belgravia sports club will be renovated for Dynamos as their training ground.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between Sakunda and Harare city, and the scope includes improvement of water supply, sewer reticulation, putting a turf, installation of bucket seats and proper parking bay, and world-class recreational facilities.

Sakunda Holdings is on an empowerment drive agenda to promote local empowerment, and this has been witnessed on the Dynamos-Highlanders deal which has seen local players pocketing their wages in foreign currency, and being able to foot their own bills. Previously, Sakunda giant has extended help to many churches, orphanage homes, community development, hospitals, and many other entities, which is a milestone for development.
