The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has said it is prepared to respond to all forms of disease outbreaks including cholera, COVID-19, and typhoid among others.
Taungana Ndoro, the Communications Director of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education revealed this yesterday to journalists who had inquired about the ministry’s preparedness in responding to cholera ahead of the opening of schools today, Tuesday 14 January 2025.
“Well, concerning cholera, we work hand-in-glove with the Ministry of Health and Child Care, which assists us in the protocols that we use in our schools to ensure that we prevent the spread of any disease outbreaks,” Ndoro said.
“Our schools are always very prepared for any disease outbreaks under the guidance of the Ministry of Health and Childcare. In the years 2020 and 2021, we had the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and we instituted standard operating procedures which are still in effect even to this day. So when there are any disease outbreaks within our schools, we implement that, and ignite that immediately,” he added.
On the issue of school fees hiking, he said no school is allowed to hike fees without the approval of the Permanent Secretary for Primary and Secondary Education.
“And remember, when a school brings its application for a school fees adjustment, they have to have first agreed or have had a consensus with parents before they approach the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education. The Permanent Secretary then deliberates or approves an agreed position between the school administration and the parents.
